The affordable landscaping solution

lunch amongst the bedsInstalled beds are those beds that we come and build for you in your garden (or wherever you wish).  We are happy to install any of our range of kit beds for you, and we can also offer the option of our sleeper beds.  In addition we will, if required, construct bark or gravel pathways around the beds.  A Home Grown Revolution vegetable garden will make a stunning addition to any home and will provide you with mouth watering produce all year round.

The sleepers that we use to build our sleeper beds are made of untreated Azobe (Lophira Alata).  Known also as Ekki, this is a dense West African hardwood.  Reclaimed from European railway systems, it is impossible to get sustainable supplies of new Azobe. They are expensive. We could spend less on the traditional creosoted type but we believe the Azobe is worth it.

Because they are untreated, no chemicals will start leaching into your soil from the effects of tannilisation or creosoting, and they don't leak tar on a hot day. That means you can sit on the edge of your bed with a cup of tea, admiring your crops and not get up with a sticky mess all over your backside. We think this is a good thing.

Moreover, they appear to be impervious to rot. Having been under the railways for over 60 years they show no signs of deterioration.

We are absolutely confident that this Home Grown Revolution raised vegetable bed will not be rotting away after a few years, and will probably outlast pretty much all of us.

Our Fixings

The sleepers are held in place by sleek metal brackets made of either stainless steel or copper, as are the frame cover plates. We use these metals for one practical reason: unlike ordinary mild steel, galvanised steel or plastic coated steel, they don't rust.  And aesthetically, both are excellent.

The stainless steel is standard on our beds and has a clean, modern feel about it.

The copper is an additional extra, and initially has a warm orange glow which will, over time, turn into the turquoise green you see on cathedral roofs.

When we install the bed for you, we ensure that the sleepers are made ready to take our frames, and by extension, our covers.   This preparation is included in the price.  If you do not wish to have the sleepers pre-fitted for the frames, then please let us know at the time of placing your order.

Our Soil

Each Home Grown Revolution installed bed is filled with a top soil/compost mix. This is more than adequate to get you off to a good start, but you should bear in mind that the best soils are those built up over a few growing seasons, and you may want to further enrich your soil depending on the crops you decide to grow.

If you already have your own supply of soil that's fine, we'll adjust our price accordingly. We can also offer you the choice of organic soil, sourced from a national supplier.

Pathway

The pathway around the bed helps to create and keep a tidy looking garden.  Edged in oak, and filled with either bark or gravel, it is lined with horticultural weed suppressing membrane, which lets water through, but keeps the weeds out.

Standard dimensions of the sleeper beds

The standard size of the azobe sleeper beds mean that you are able to easily access the middle from both sides without ever having to tread on the soil, whilst still being able to grow a really good quantity and variety of crops.

4m x 3m (including pathway of 75cm around the bed).

Planting area: 2.2m x 1.2m

Height: 25cm for standard bed, 50cm for double height.

Custom-made beds

For those of you who would like beds of a different size please give us a call, we'd be very happy to talk through your requirements with you.
